How do credit card payments work?

If you've accepted credit card payments in the past, it probably seemed simple enough. Your customer swipes or dips their credit card or enters the card number online, and the sale gets approved. In the seconds between the initial swipe and receiving an approval or denial message, sensitive financial information is communicated between the reader, the network and the bank.
